Ebook About An award-winning political journalist for The Atlantic tells the inside story of how the embattled Democratic party, seeking a direction for its future during the Trump years, successfully regained the White House. The 2020 presidential campaign was a defining moment for America. As Donald Trump and his nativist populism cowed the Republican Party into submission, many Democrats—haunted by Hillary Clinton’s shocking loss in 2016, which led to a four-year-long identity crisis—were convinced he would be unbeatable. Their party and the country, it seemed, might never recover. How, then, did Democrats manage to win the presidency, especially after the longest primary race and the biggest field ever? How did they keep themselves united through an internal struggle between newly empowered progressives and establishment forces—playing out against a pandemic, an economic crisis, and a new racial reckoning? Edward-Isaac Dovere’s Battle for the Soul is the searing, fly-on-the-wall account of the Democrats’ journey through recalibration and rebirth. Dovere traces this process from the early days in the wilderness of the post-Obama era, though the jockeying of potential candidates, to the backroom battles and exhausting campaigns, to the unlikely triumph of the man few expected to win, and through the inauguration and insurrection at the Capitol. Dovere draws on years of on-the-ground reporting and contemporaneous conversations with the key players—whether in Pete Buttigieg’s hotel suite in Des Moines an hour before he won the Iowa caucuses or Joe Biden’s first-ever interview in the Oval Office—as well as aides, advisors, and voters. With unparalleled access and an insider’s command of the campaign, Battle for the Soul offers a compelling look at the policies, politics, people, and the often absurd process of running for president. This fresh and timely story brings you on the trail, into the private rooms and along to eavesdrop on critical conversations. You will never see campaigns or this turning point in our history the same way again.Book Battle for the Soul: Inside the Democrats' Campaigns to Defeat Trump Review :
I would really like to read a good, well-written book about the Trump-Biden Presidential campaign. This is not it. The author gets bogged down in describing the campaign details, and especially the constant infighting among Democratic politicians, consultants, and others. The first part of this book discusses Clinton's failed 2016 campaign against Trump. Surprisingly, Obama gets almost as much blame as Hillary. Then the author moves on to cover the Democrats' efforts' to pick up the pieces, and to create a viable grassroots movement. The bulk of the book covers in detail the Democratic primaries. The author seems to delight in pointing out the flaws in each candidate. A final brief section of the book focuses on the actual Presidential campaign. I did not learn much new from this book, except for the behind the scenes backbiting among the Democrats. The author spends little time analyzing Trump's appeal, as well as Biden's alternative vision for for the country. There’s a great idea for a book here. The Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden wings of the Democratic Party are so fundamentally opposed that in any other country, they would be in opposition parties. How did this intellectual battle play out? Why did Obama do so much to fight against universal healthcare and action on climate change? What did Warren think she was doing to the causes she said she supported by staying in the race well after she’d lost? What makes people join the Democratic Party and then govern like Republicans? Do Democrats who do this recognize their hypocrisy, or don’t they? This book deals with none of that. Instead, it’s basically a retread of Lucky, the other book published on the 2020 election. Instead of the ideas, it’s as if the author is only interested in the exterior news that we already lived through. As a metaphor - it’s like reading about a chess game where pieces are described moving, but what they’re attacking or the actual strategies involved are completely absent. This wouldn’t be enough on its own to bring the book down to one star, but there are some outright lies and omissions that make this absolutely awful from a journalistic perspective, mainly around the allegations against Biden. Regardless of if you believe Reade or not (and there are good reasons on both sides), the facts are simply absent. Why doesn’t the author mention that Anita Dunn’s PR firm killed the Tara Reade allegation in late January, right before Biden gave Dunn a huge promotion in early February? Why lie about Reade by ignoring that her allegation has been around since the mid-‘90s? Why say her story “dramatically” changed to try and demean her? Why lie about her requests to verify documentation? The book does a real disservice to victims of sexual assault; shame on it for that, and for not doing the necessary journalistic legwork to look at the situation objectively. None of us can know if it really happened or not; but reporting less than the full story and actively lying about parts of it is absolute journalistic malfeasance.Lucky, the other 2020 election book, isn’t great either; it falls into many of the same traps. That said, between the two, I’d suggest that one over this—mainly because it’s shorter.
