I have used the first edition for a long time to help me in preparing lessons and just refreshing my concepts of God and life.I’m taking a new student through Theology so I wanted to give him Grudem’s book because it is the best thing to help him grow and learn. But the 2nd edition is what was available. So that is what he got.When it came I read the introduction to see what the differences were. If you have had the first edition read the introduction, if the additions are something you want to learn about then buy this edition. I bought it on Kindle since I only needed to read the new items. But my student is thoroughly enjoying the whole book.What is even more fantastic was discovering a “Workbook” that goes along with it. This workbook was prepared by graduate students to help other students dig deeper into the work. I highly recommend that you buy both if this is your first time reading Grudem. After graduating from high school, I went to Christ for the Nations Bible College in BC, Canada. From 2009 to 2010 my life was greatly transformed by the Lord and one of the books He used was Dr. Grudem’s Systematic Theology. Since that time I was first introduced to deeper, Biblical, and academic study of the Christian faith Dr. Grudem’s systematic theology has been the standard/primary ST textbook that I use first. After reading Dr. Grudem I’ll turn to other theologians like Calvin, Berkhof, Hodge, Vos, Oden, Reymond, Erickson, Lewis & Demarest, Williams, Bird, MacArthur & Mayhue, Akin, and many more!Since 2009 I’ve studied apologetics, theology, church history, historical theology, and more at the Bible College/Seminary level. I believe that Dr. Grudem’s updated classic is a must have for your library. He includes current and relevant topics that interest Christians today. A theological persuasion that I also share and promote.What I like about Dr. Grudem’s ST is that it’s easy to read, well organized, and he covers all the major loci of Christian doctrine from Scripture and God to the Church and End Times.If money was no object and I would be able to complete my degree I would want to be an apologetics and systematic theology professor in a Bible College or Seminary. I would use Dr. Grudem’s 2nd edition of systematic theology and Dr. Robert Reymond’s 2nd edition of systematic theology for my theology classes (Dr. Beeke and Dr. Smalley’s 4 volume Reformed Systematic Theology series is amazing also!).One critique of the book is that in the first printing of the book there are some editorial and reference mistakes throughout the book that need to be corrected. I am working on a review and corrections list of these errors right now for a future revised printing. I pray the Lord grants me, Dr. Grudem, and Zondervan Academic the ability and drive to make sure this book is as up to date and professionally made as possible.
